Foreword

Chongqing Medical University, Chinese Society for Laboratory Medicine, Chongqing Society for Laboratory Medicine and a group of oversea Chinese laboratory medicine specialists have successfully co-sponsored three wonderful symposiums in relation to clinical laboratory medicine (ICMS 2008, ILMS 2011 and ILMS 2013) providing an open platform for discussions and all participants obtained ample opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences.

In 2008, the first symposium was focused on the latest developments and technologies in detection and identification of infectious disease agents, quality assurance, and daily management in the field of clinical microbiology services. In 2011, the organizers regained to sponsor ILMS 2011 with meeting theme of “From Clinical Laboratory Services to Translational Medicine Researches”. This symposium highlighted translational research in laboratory medicine. The scopes were expanded to the whole clinical laboratory medicine area. In 2013, the organizers sponsored ILMS 2013 and celebrated the 30th Anniversary of School of Laboratory Medicine, CQMU with main theme on “Go Molecular”.

In 2015, the organizers plan to sponsor ILMS 2015 with main theme on “Laboratory Medicine in Panomic Era”. In order to promote the communications in the laboratory medicine field, the ILMS 2015 will be jointly held with the Chongqing Society of Laboratory Medicine annual meeting. We will continue inviting famous oversea Chinese experts working in the clinical laboratory field to attend and present in ILMS 2015. In addition to keynote speeches and panel discussions, we will bring in clinical case presentations and graduate student and postdoctoral fellow oral presentations. We will keep the evening group discussions between experts and students.

On behalf of organizing committees, we would like to extend our cordial invitation to all of the clinical and scientific workers in the field of laboratory medicine and our gratitude to all of the sponsors, representatives and academic committees.

Chongqing is known for its foggy weather in the spring and winter, which gives this city its nickname of “foggy city”. The weather is not hot enough in July, and it would be a nice time for you to attend this symposium and visit the city.

Welcome to Chongqing.

David Y. Zhang ( ) MD, PhD, MPH is the Professor and Director of Molecular Pathology at the Department of Pathology. He obtained his MD from Norm Bethune School of Medicine of Jilin University, PhD from New York University School of Medicine, and MPH from Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He subsequently completed his residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology as well as fellowship training in Cytopathology and Clinical Microbiology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York. He also completed second residency in Preventive Medicine (Occupational Medicine) at the Selikoff Center, Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is licensed to practice medicine in New York and New Jersey and certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Cytopathology, Molecular Genetic Pathology by the American Boards of Pathology and Medical Genetics as well as Preventive Medicine by American Board of Preventive Medicine. He currently practices surgical pathology, cytopathology and molecular pathology with strong interest in solid tumor pathology. His major research interest is to develop genomic (DNA Ramification Amplification, RAM) and proteomic (Protein Pathway Array, PPA) technologies for biomarker discovery and molecular diagnosis. He currently holds more than 10 US and International patents and published more than 60 scientific papers in major peer reviewed journals.

Jane Y. Wu吴瑛MD, PhD is Dr. Charles L. Mix Research Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, USA. Dr. Wu’s team has been investigating molecular mechanisms of gene regulation, particularly those involved in neural development and neural degeneration. She focuses on two areas, RNA processing and cell migration with particular interest in molecular/ cellular mechanisms underlying neurological disorders and cancer invasion/ metastasis. Dr. Wu is an elected member of ASCI (American Society for Clinical Investigation), AAP (Association of American Physicians) and AAAS fellow. She has published more than 140 peer-reviewed articles, including those published in Cell, Nature, Science, Nature Neuroscience and edited two books, “RNA & Cancer” (Springer) and “Post-Transcriptional Gene Regulation” (Wiley-VCH). Dr. Wu co-founded and chaired the Gordon Research Conference in “Post-Transcriptional Gene Regulation”.

Jing-Ren Zhang (张敬仁). Ph.D., Professor and Assistant Dean, Center for Infectious Disease Research, School of Medicine, Tsinghua University. Dr. Zhang was trained as medical microbiologist. His past research has led to the discovery of the VlsE antigenic variation system in the Lyme disease agent Borrelia burgdorferi and the development of the VlsE-based C6 diagnosis system. The C6 system has been widely used in the serological diagnosis of Lyme disease in humans and animals worldwide. He also discovered the poly-Ig receptor (pIgR) as an epithelial receptor for Streptococcus pneumoniae, a Gram-positive bacterium that causes serious human infections, such as community-acquired pneumonia, otitis media, and meningitis. S. pneumoniae has been found only in humans under natural conditions but the mechanisms of this host specificity remains unclear. Dr. Zhang’s laboratory has identified that choline-binding protein A (CbpA), a surface-exposed protein of S. pneumoniae, binds to several host proteins in a human-specific manner, including pIgR and complement factor H. These findings have provided the first evidence at the molecular level that at least partially explains why S. pneumoniae is a strict human pathogen. Based on the genome-wide genetic and molecular studies, his team has also discovered many novel bacterial genes/proteins that are necessary for the growth and infectivity of S. pneumoniae and Francisella tularensis. These studies have provided valuable information for further characterizing the molecular basis of pathogenesis for these pathogens.

Kurt Reed, MD, MGIS, D(ABMM) is a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine who began his appointment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2012. His main research activities involve the study of infectious diseases, especially those that have strong environmental mediators.

Philip W. Hinds, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of the Department of Developmental, Molecular, and Chemical Biology (DMCB) at Tufts University School of Medicine. Prior to accepting this position in 2013, Dr. Hinds was an Investigator at the Molecular Oncology Institute (MORI) at Tufts Medical Center. In recognition of the strong thematic links between DMCB and MORI, Dr. Hinds remains Associate Director of MORI and is Deputy Director of the Tufts Cancer Center, with a secondary appointment as Professor of Radiation Oncology. Dr. Hinds arrived at Tufts Medical Center in 2003 after ten years as Assistant and Associate Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. Following his BS in Biochemistry at the University of Maine, Dr. Hinds received his Ph.D. in molecular biology from Princeton University, where he worked with Dr. Arnold Levine. His seminal studies in the Levine lab were the first to demonstrate that p53 possesses tumor suppressor activity, and is subject to inactivating point mutations in human cancers. P53 is now known to be one of the most frequently mutated genes in human cancer. Subsequent postdoctoral training in Robert Weinberg’s lab at the Whitehead Institute focused on functional analysis of the retinoblastoma protein, pRb, and demonstrated that this tumor suppressor is directly regulated by the core cell cycle machinery. These studies helped establish the concept of the pRb pathway as a highly penetrant oncogenic/tumor suppressive biochemical pathway involved in the genesis or progression of most human tumors. His current work implicates the pRb pathway in regulating stem cell pools and cell fate decisions during the differentiation and development of several tissue types, broadening the impact of this pathway beyond cancer to include key roles in other diseases marked by altered developmental processes. Current research is focused on basic and translational studies of cancers of the bone and mammary gland, as well melanoma. In addition to his roles at TUSM, Dr. Hinds is a Senior Editor for the journal Cancer Research, a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Dr. Hinds is chair of the Molecular Oncogenesis standing study section at the National Institutes of Health.

Xiaoli Lilly Pang(庞晓莉), MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Alberta, and the Provincial Laboratory for Public Health (Microbiology), Alberta, Canada.

Xiang-Yang Han (韩向阳), MD, PhD, is a professor of pathology and microbiology and a medical director at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, USA. Dr. Han obtained his medical degree from Shanghai Medical University and PhD in microbiology from the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He did residency of anatomical and clinical pathology at the Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology. He practices clinical microbiology and oversees regional care laboratories at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. His research involves bacterial genetics, bacterial taxonomy, viruses, leprosy, and various opportunistic infections. Dr. Han has described eight new bacterial species, defined a clinic-pathologic syndrome, published 80 original research contributions, and deposited 60 gene sequences in the GenBank.

Dr. Xiaotian Zheng (郑晓天) received his medical degree from Beijing Second Medical College, and his Master Degree of Medical Microbiology at the Capital Institute of Pediatrics and Graduate School of PUMC in Beijing.  After obtaining his Ph.D. in microbiology and molecular biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he went through post-doctoral clinical microbiology training at the Mayo Clinic.  He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM). He has been directing clinical microbiology laboratory for the past 15 years in the U.S. He currently is the Director of Microbiology at Ann & Robert H. Children’s Hospital of Chicago and an Associate Professor of Pathology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He has published numerous articles in clinical microbiology and virology.

Yi-Wei Tang (汤一苇), MD, PhD is currently the Chief of the Clinical Microbiology Service at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City, USA.
